How do I connect a Shopify collaborator code automatically?

Joiyn auto-generates and uses the Shopify collaborator code via OAuth and the Partners API. The client never sees the 4-character code — they just sign in to Shopify and confirm "add my agency as a collaborator". Your Partner dashboard shows the store as connected within seconds.

First — what's a Shopify collaborator code?

Shopify added the collaborator code as a security mechanism so Partners can't request access to any store just by knowing the .myshopify.com URL. The store owner gets a 4-character code (e.g. X7K2) under Settings → Users and Permissions → Security. Without that code, your collaborator request gets rejected at submission.

The old agency flow: ask the client for the code, hope they find Users and Permissions, hope they type it right, hope they don't regenerate the code before you submit the request. Joiyn skips the whole code-exchange dance by using Shopify OAuth + the Partners API on the client's behalf.

The fast way: one Joiyn link

1. Create the connect link

In the Joiyn dashboard, select Shopify and pick the permissions your agency needs (Products, Orders, Customers, Analytics, Apps, Themes, etc.). You can restrict the scope if the client is sensitive about full-store access.

2. Send the link to the client

The client receives a Joiyn link and clicks it. They land on a branded portal — no Joiyn account creation, no store URL entry.

3. Client signs in with Shopify

The client clicks Continue with Shopify and signs in with their store owner account. Shopify's OAuth flow runs; the client sees a plain-English summary of the permissions your agency is requesting.

4. Joiyn handles the collaborator request invisibly

Behind the scenes, Joiyn calls Shopify's Partner API with your agency's credentials, submits a collaborator request scoped to the permissions you requested, and the client's OAuth confirmation acts as the code-exchange equivalent. The collaborator request is auto-approved on the client's side. Your Partner dashboard shows the store immediately.

The slow way: manual code exchange

The traditional flow that most agencies still use:

  1. You log into your Shopify Partner dashboard → Stores → Add store → Manage existing.
  2. You enter the client's .myshopify.com URL.
  3. Shopify asks for the 4-character collaborator code.
  4. You email or message the client asking for the code.
  5. The client logs into Shopify Admin → Settings → Users and Permissions → Security → finds the code.
  6. They send you the code. You type it in. You submit the collaborator request with the scopes you want.
  7. Shopify emails the client to approve the request. They click Accept (or miss the email).
  8. If anything was wrong — code typed wrong, code regenerated, request rejected — you restart.

Median time-to-access: 1 to 3 days. Joiyn collapses this into the OAuth confirmation step — a single Shopify login the client already does daily.

Common pitfalls (and how Joiyn handles them)

  • Client doesn't know where the collaborator code lives. Joiyn skips the code entirely via OAuth.
  • Code typed wrong (0 vs O, 1 vs I, l vs I). No code = no typo.
  • Collaborator requests disabled on the store. Shopify lets store owners disable this entirely. Joiyn detects and surfaces a clear path to re-enable.
  • Multi-store accounts. Joiyn lists every store under the client's Shopify account and lets them pick which to grant.
  • Plus / Enterprise stores. Higher-tier stores have additional access controls (Shopify Plus organization-level). Joiyn supports both standard and Plus collaborator flows.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for Shopify Plus stores?

Yes. Plus stores use the same Partner collaborator system but add organization-level access controls. Joiyn handles both — for Plus, the request goes through the Plus organization first, then to the individual store. See Shopify collaborator code troubleshooting for the details.

Will my agency's Partner account get charged?

No. Collaborator access is free for both the store owner and the Partner — it doesn't consume one of the store's paid staff seats. Joiyn's Shopify integration doesn't add any Shopify-side fee either.

What permissions does collaborator access include?

By default, the Shopify Partner's full set: Products, Orders, Customers, Online Store (Themes, Pages, Blog posts), Apps, Analytics, Marketing, Settings. The client (and you) can restrict the scope per request — Joiyn surfaces the same scope picker Shopify uses.

Can I get access to the Shopify admin without a Partner account?

No — only via "staff" access, which consumes a paid seat on the store. Collaborator access via a Partner account is the only free path. Create a Partner account at partners.shopify.com if you don't have one yet.

Skip the collaborator code dance.
